Little Gem Chardonnay 2017

Little Gem Chardonnay 2017

Little Gem wines are only produced in outstanding vintages when the vines produce grapes of exceptional quality and balance. 2017 was certainly a Little Gem year. Suzanne Little was previously winemaker for Rosemount Estate where she was responsible for their range of premium Chardonnay.

This fruit was grown in the Broke-Fordwich sub region of the Hunter Valley from 22 year old vines.

Winemaking Notes

The fruit was partially crushed to the press to allow for a portion of whole bunches. The fruit was very gently pressed and only the free run portion was used. 20% of the juice was fermented in new French barriques, a further 20% fermented in older French barriques and the balance in stainless steel. Theo oak portion was held on yeast lees for 6 months with regular lees stirring (battonage). The wine was blended and bottled in late October.

Alcohol 12.8%
pH 3.26

Tasting Notes

The style is textural and savoury with oak playing a supporting rather than dominant role. The crisp, mineral characters of the fruit are supported by the complex flavours of oak and maturation on lees. Delicious stone fruit flavours with a textural mouthfeel and crisp finish. This is a delightful drink.
