Vermentino 2017

Vermentino 2017

Vermentino is a relative newcomer on the Australian landscape but is set become a favourite due to its natural texture and versatility. The grape variety Vermentino is believed to have travelled first to Corsica and then to Italy where it is the dominant white wine grape of Sardinia. It is a late-ripening grape variety which loves a hot dry climate, a natural choice for the Hunter Valley.

The grapes for this wine were sourced from the historic Roxburgh vineyard in the Upper Hunter Valley. Grafted onto 20 year Chardonnay rootstock the decision to trial Vermentino is certainly paying off. True to its reputation as a late ripening variety we harvested the Vermentino grapes in late February, after all of the Hunter reds were picked.

Winemaking Notes

The free run portion was fermented separately to the pressings. 20% of the free run juice and 50% of the pressings were fermented naturally in two and three year old French oak. The balance of the juice was tank fermented with cultured yeast 13C. The wine was held on yeast lees for 5 months to add flavour complexity and a creamy texture to the palate. The pressings component was fined and added back to the free run juice.

Tasting Notes

Our Vermentino shows wonderful aromas of jasmine, white nectarine and a touch of warm spice. The palate is textural and full bodied with flavours of pear and a crisp minerality. The ultimate food wine.
